Fremont High School

Attended John C. Fremont high school; A Los Angeles City champion high jumper with a record of
6'10" which was the highest jump in California and the second highest jump in the nation. Steve competed
for East Los Angeles Jr. College and was two-time Southern California champion and 1969 Jr. College
State champion. Also during that year Steve was the number one high jumper in the nation. After two years, Steve
graduated from East Los Angeles Jr. College and transferred to UCLA. He was a member of two national
championship teams while at UCLA. Steve was voted co-captain of the 1972 championship team. In 1973,
Steve started his coaching career at his former high school, John C. Fremont, under Richard "Dick" Gatlin.
Together they won various championships; 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1977. Steve went on to become head coach at
John C. Fremont and won various championships; 1981, 1982, 1984, and 1987. Steve worked as a assistant
coach at UCLA in 1987 and 1988 and won the national championship. Steve coached 8 years as assistant coach
at UCLA and won several Pac 10 championships. During 1993 -1995 Steve worked as assistant coach at USC
with very successful tenured . Steve currently is the head coach at Fremont high school were he has coached four
national Championships. Over the course of the years, Steve has coached two world record holders (Kevin Young,
400 hurdles) and Mike Powell (Long Jumper). Steve has successfully coached three 50ft or better triple jumpers,
four 24ft and beyond long jumpers, and six 7ft high jumpers. Steve Lang has produced many league and
championships in the sprints, mid distance, relays, distance, jumps, and throws.
