Howard Smith

1934-2009

 

A native Angeleno, Coach Smith graduated from John Marshall High school and LA City College.  He furthered his education at USC where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Physical Education, Coach Smith was a three time National Champion in the Pentathlon and placed nationally in the Decathalon, Discus, and 440yd. hurdles.

 

Coach Smith started his teaching career at North High School in Torrance in 1959; then he moved on to Redondo and Westchester High School.

 

Coach Howard Smith taught science at Westchester High School from 1988 until his retirement in 1998.  He coached the boys and girls track and field programs and won the LA City Championship in both divisions in 1995.  He was loved by all his athletes and many went on to success in life from his example as a teacher, coach and as an athlete.

 

 His love for track and field, teaching, and his wife Kay of 49 years, was his signature legacy.  All who knew him will remember his smile and jovial spirit
